madurai

The third largest city in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Madurai is nestled amidst three majestic hills - Yanaimalai, Nagamalai and Pasumalai. According to legends, this city was established around the ancient Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. The name 'Madurai' is derived from the word mathuram, meaning sweetness, since it is the place where drops of sweet nectar had fallen from Lord Shiva's hair. Owing to its religious significance and the number of temples sprawling across the region, Madurai came to be known as the 'Athens of the East'. The city is host to many textile industries and is also famous for its production of Jasmine flowers. With bustling markets, old palaces, well-preserved museums, majestic shrines and innumerable festivals, the city offers a perfect blend of history, art, culture and spirituality.
