India is known worldwide as the land of Buddha and people often visit the country to pay their regards to the Enlightened One. One such Indian destination, which reminds of the great Buddhist sage, is Sarnath where he delivered his first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Over the years, the place has seen a lot of architectural and artistic activities that were unveiled after archaeological excavations.
Perhaps the most famous monument at Sarnath, Chaukhandi Stupa was built by Akbar during his visit around 234 BC. The Mughal emperor was a follower of Lord Buddha and spread his message of love and compassion throughout his reign.
Dhamek Stupa
Rising to a height of 43.6 m, the Dhamek Stupa is one of the most splendid structures at Sarnath. Made of brick and stone, this cylindrical structure is adorned with intricate floral carvings dating back to the Gupta period.
Dharmarajika Stupa
Dharmarajika Stupa is counted among the few stupas that were built in the pre-Ashokan period. Only the foundation of this stupa remains at the site while the rest was taken to Varanasi in the 18th century for construction activities.
Mulagandha Kuti Vihar
Built by the Mahabodhi Society, Mulagandha Kuti Vihar is a modern temple that features some excellent frescoes by Japan’s foremost painter - Kosetsu Nosu. It is believed to be hold one of the largest repositories of Buddhist literature.
Sarnath Museum
Sarnath Museum is the oldest museum to be preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Some of the finest specimens of Buddhist art are exhibited at this museum, including Buddha and Bodhisattva images and the National Emblem.
Deer Park
Perhaps the most revered site in Sarnath, the Deer Park marks the place where Lord Buddha proclaimed Dharma, giving his first sermon. Presently, this scenic park is inhabited by a number of deer, along with numerous bird species.
