Agra

Situated on the banks of Yamuna River, Agra is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that this city was established in 1475 by Raja Badal Singh, a Sikarwar Rajput king. However, its earliest references are found in the epic Mahabharata, where it is called Agraban. The city gained importance after it was made the capital by Sultan Sikandar Lodi in 1506, but achieved fame only under the rule of Mughals. During its golden period (1556-1658), the erstwhile capital of Hindustan witnessed the construction of impressive monuments like the Red Fort. Over the years, Mughal emperors adorned the city with numerous edifices, but its most prized possession will always be the beautiful Taj Mahal - built by Shah Jahan. Besides architectural masterpieces, the city surprises tourists with a rich cultural legacy; be it arts and crafts or authentic Mughlai cuisine.

  1. Taj Mahal

Built by Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his consort, Mumtaz, the Taj Mahal can rightly be called the jewel of Muslim art in India. This pure white marble mausoleum is internationally famed as an epitome of love.

  2. Red Fort

A sister monument of the Taj, the Red Fort of Agra was built by Akbar after he ascended the throne in 1654. The fort encompasses some exquisite structures like Sheesh Mahal, Diwan-e-Am, Diwan-e-Khas and Anguri Bagh.

  3. Sikandra

The final resting place of emperor Akbar, Sikandra was built in 1613 combining the best of Islamic and Hindu architecture. This well-preserved mausoleum is a true reflection of the ruler's secular outlook and philosophy.

  4. Itmad-ud-Daulah

The ornate marble tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, standing on the banks of Yamuna River, exhibits Persian influences. It was built by Noorjahan, wife of emperor Jahangir, in the memory of her father - Mirza Ghiyas Beg.

  5. Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh is a 25-acre garden complex, located on the opposite bank of the Taj. This place was once painted with colourful flowers, fountain jets, shaded pavilions and clear water pools
